Julie Andrews Blasted by Fans
In the wise words of LL Cool J, "Don't call it a comeback."
Irate Julie Andrews fans are demanding their money back after the singer sang only TWO songs during a so-called "comeback" concert in London.
Stuff New Zealand writes...
The 74-year-old performed at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday night, with hundreds of fans pouring to the venue in eager anticipation. Julie had not appeared on the UK stage for 30 years, and the concert was billed by promoters as a "gift of music old and new".
The star has not sung in public much since 1997, when she had an operation to remove growths from her vocal chords. She has repeatedly warned the procedure damaged her voice, and had said her performance over the weekend would be affected.
However, fans have alleged Julie only sang two songs at the show, leaving the rest of the tracks to her backing singers. Furious fans left the concert early, with many queuing for a refund on their way out. Tickets for the night cost up to £140.
"I feel totally robbed and I would like the ticket price back. I saw at least 2,000 people walking out. It became like a second-rate pantomime," said Graham Well, who paid £420 for five tickets and left early.
The first half of the show saw Julie watch as five singers performed hits from musicals. After the intermission, she read out a version of a kids' book she had penned with her daughter.
"We felt duped," 15-year-old Sarah Brook told British newspaper The Daily Mirror. "It was a showcase for the book.”
The show's organizers claim the marketing made it clear that solo acts by Ms. Andrews would only make up a small part of the evening. Oh really? Is that why it was called "An Evening with Julie Andrews"?
How about a little truth in advertising, like "An Evening with Julie Andrews and Friends," or "A Minute with Julie Andrews, a Lifetime with Non-Headlining Filler"? It may not sound glamorous, but at least there won't be as many fans feeling scammed and ripped off. Just a thought!
