Overreaction from a Transit Officer
Overreaction from a Transit Officer
It was the summer of 2007 or 2008. I was on a bus excursion, making a transfer between buses at the Union City Bart Station. I went to ask the station agent if I could use their restroom. She wasn't there, and no other Bart employee was, so I go. When I come back out, a Bart Police officer immediately stops me. He starts yelling at me about sneaking into the system, evading fare payment. I kept trying to tell him that I just used the restroom but he just wouldn't believe me, and continued to question why I snuck on Bart! "WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REAL WITH ME?!" the cop projected. I told him that I "would like to be real with him," and he just continued on, before taking me to the information booth, where the station agent should have been, to confirm that I asked to use the restroom. NOW she was there, out of nowhere! The officer asked, the agent denied, and the cop let me off, ending the whole thing. The cop's name tag, if I remember right, read "E. Torranjo Jr.," and he had that combed back style hair. The Bart TV video* I saw featured a Bart cop, named Esteban ("E") Toscano (maybe not "Torranjo") Junior, with that same face, and with that same combed back hair. So I accuse E(steban) Torranjo/Toscano Junior, for wrongly accusing me of fare evasion, for making something small a giant deal, and for "having to scare me as an authority figure," as he told my mom on the phone.**
*Bart TV video: Should anyone desire to see his face, go to bart.gov/barttv, search for "Bart Joins the Fun at Oakland's Chinatown Streetfest," and skip the video toward the middle.
**as...phone: I managed to call home from a payphone, and my mom called the station.
